When I cried out to the Lord, he heard my voice in the face of those who attack me. Entrust your cares to the Lord and he will sustain you (Ps 54:17-20, 23).

During Lent, the liturgy insists on the need for renunciation, acceptance of the cross and overcoming selfishness, indispensable attitudes in faithfully following Jesus. Let us renew our choice for this path of life and salvation.

First Reading: Deuteronomy 30:15-20

Reading from the Book of Deuteronomy – Moses spoke to the people, saying: 15“See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. 16 If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I am giving you today—to love the LORD your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commands, his laws, and his decrees—then you will live and multiply, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess. 17 But if your heart turns away and you refuse to listen, and if you are led astray and worship other gods and serve them, 18 I tell you today that you will surely perish. You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and occupy. 19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life, so that you and your descendants may live, 20 loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and he will prolong your days, so that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to give to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” – The Word of the Lord.

Gospel: Luke 9,22-25

Reflection:

After Peter’s confession, recognizing Jesus as the Messiah, it is Jesus’ turn to speak out and reveal his future on earth. By predicting his destiny on the cross, he shows the demands made on those who want to follow him: “deny yourself, carry your cross daily, and follow me.” Jesus himself gives us the example by accepting the destiny of being nailed to the cross for the salvation of humanity. Before offering the cross, he carries it himself, just as he practices renunciation before proposing it to his disciples. Jesus is a true Master, who teaches through his example. He is not a masochist who proposes random suffering. When he speaks of pain and the surrender of one’s own life, he is symbolically saying that we must prioritize the spiritual dimension in order to be worthy of the Kingdom. And this involves several renunciations and some mortifications; after all, “what good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet forfeit or forfeit their own soul?”

Quando clamei pelo Senhor, ele escutou minha voz diante daqueles que me atacam. Confia ao Senhor os teus cuidados e ele mesmo te sustentará (Sl 54,17-20.23).

Durante a Quaresma, a liturgia insiste na necessidade de renúncia, aceitação da cruz e superação do egoísmo, atitudes indispensáveis no seguimento fiel de Jesus. Renovemos nossa opção por esse caminho de vida e salvação.

Reflexão:

Após a confissão de Pedro, reconhecendo Jesus como Messias, é a vez de Jesus se pronunciar e revelar seu futuro na terra. Ao predizer seu destino de cruz, mostra as exigências feitas a quem quer segui-lo: “renuncie a si mesmo, carregue sua cruz a cada dia e me siga”. Jesus mesmo nos dá o exemplo, ao aceitar o destino de ser pregado na cruz pela salvação da humanidade. Antes de oferecer a cruz, ele próprio a carrega, assim como pratica a renúncia antes de propô-la aos seus discípulos. Jesus é verdadeiro Mestre, que ensina através do seu exemplo. Não é um masoquista que propõe o sofrimento aleatório. Quando fala das dores e da entrega da própria vida, está simbolicamente dizendo que devemos privilegiar a dimensão espiritual para sermos dignos do Reino. E isso comporta diversas renúncias e algumas mortificações; afinal, “de que adianta alguém ganhar o mundo inteiro, e perder ou destruir a si mesmo?”.
