On this Lenten journey, let us celebrate the Lord. He manifests his love, revealing his plans and his desire that we all be holy and possess his Kingdom through commitment and care for the poor and needy.

First Reading: Leviticus 19:1-2.11-18

A reading from the Book of Leviticus – 1The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2“Speak to the entire assembly of the children of Israel and say to them: Be holy, because I, the Lord your God, am holy. 11Do not steal, do not lie, and do not deceive one another. 12Do not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of the Lord your God. I am the Lord. 13Do not exploit or extort money from your neighbor. Do not withhold the wages of a hired worker until the next day. 14Do not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind, but fear your God. Gospel: Matthew 25:31-46

Hail, Christ, light of life, / a companion in sharing!

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew – At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: 31“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, accompanied by all the angels, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32All the peoples of the earth will be gathered before him, and he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you welcomed me; 36I was naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you visited me; I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you? When did we see you thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, naked and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40Then the King will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’ 41Then the King will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed! Reflection:

Today, God repeats to every Christian the invitation he made to Moses and the Hebrew people in the desert: “Be holy.” How? Jesus himself instructs us, presenting a list of actions that have passed into Christian tradition as the “corporal works of mercy”: feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, caring for the sick, clothing the cold, welcoming the stranger and the stranger, visiting prisoners, in short, acting with justice and fraternity. Whoever does not act in this way will not be worthy of the Kingdom. It is Christ himself who manifests himself in the face of each of these needy people. In this Lenten season, it is worth rereading the exhortation.

Neste caminho quaresmal, celebremos o Senhor. Ele manifesta seu amor, revelando seus projetos e seu desejo de que todos sejamos santos e possuamos o seu Reino mediante o compromisso e o cuidado com os pobres e necessitados.

Primeira Leitura: Levítico 19,1-2.11-18

Leitura do livro do Levítico – 1O Senhor falou a Moisés, dizendo: 2“Fala a toda a comunidade dos filhos de Israel e dize-lhes: Sede santos, porque eu, o Senhor vosso Deus, sou santo. 11Não furteis, não digais mentiras nem vos enganeis uns aos outros. 12Não jureis falso por meu nome, profanando o nome do Senhor teu Deus. Eu sou o Senhor. 13Não explores o teu próximo nem pratiques extorsão contra ele. Não retenhas contigo a diária do assalariado até o dia seguinte. 14Não amaldiçoes o surdo nem ponhas tropeço diante do cego, mas temerás o teu Deus. Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus – Naquele tempo, disse Jesus aos seus discípulos: 31“Quando o Filho do Homem vier em sua glória, acompanhado de todos os anjos, então se assentará em seu trono glorioso. 32Todos os povos da terra serão reunidos diante dele, e ele separará uns dos outros, assim como o pastor separa as ovelhas dos cabritos. 33E colocará as ovelhas à sua direita e os cabritos à sua esquerda. 34Então o Rei dirá aos que estiverem à sua direita: ‘Vinde, benditos de meu Pai! Com sede e te demos de beber? 38Quando foi que te vimos como estrangeiro e te recebemos em casa, e sem roupa e te vestimos? 39Quando foi que te vimos doente ou preso e fomos te visitar?’ 40Então o Rei lhes responderá: ‘Em verdade eu vos digo que, todas as vezes que fizestes isso a um dos menores de meus irmãos, foi a mim que o fizestes!’ 41Depois o Rei dirá aos que estiverem à sua esquerda: ‘Afastai-vos de mim, malditos! Ide para o fogo eterno, preparado para o diabo e para os seus anjos. 42Pois eu estava com fome e não me destes de comer; eu estava com sede e não me destes de beber; 43eu era estrangeiro e não me recebestes em casa; eu estava nu e não me vestistes; eu estava doente e na prisão e não fostes me visitar’. 44E responderão também eles: ‘Senhor, quando foi que te vimos com fome ou com sede, como estrangeiro ou nu, doente ou preso, e não te servimos?’ 45Então o Rei lhes responderá: ‘Em verdade eu vos digo, todas as vezes que não fizestes isso a um desses pequeninos, foi a mim que não o fizestes!’ 46Portanto, estes irão para o castigo eterno, enquanto os justos irão para a vida eterna”. – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

Deus repete a cada cristão, hoje, o convite que fez a Moisés e ao povo hebreu no deserto: “Sede santos”. Como? Jesus mesmo nos instrui, apresentando um elenco de ações que passaram para a tradição cristã como as “obras de misericórdia corporal”: dar de comer a quem tem fome, dar de beber a quem tem sede, assistir o doente, vestir o que sente frio, acolher o estrangeiro e o peregrino, visitar os presos, enfim, agir com justiça e fraternidade. Aquele que não agir assim, não será digno do Reino. É o próprio Cristo que se manifesta no rosto de cada um desses necessitados. Neste tempo quaresmal, vale a pena reler a exortação.
