The law of the Lord is perfect, it converts hearts. The testimony of the Lord is faithful, it gives wisdom to the little ones (Ps 18:8).

In this celebration, let us ask for the grace to live without restrictions the commandment of love, as taught by Jesus, following the path of holiness.

First Reading: Deuteronomy 26:16-19

Reading from the Book of Deuteronomy – Moses addressed the people of Israel and said to them: 16 “Today the Lord your God commands you to observe these precepts and decrees. Keep them and observe them with all your heart and with all your soul. 17 Today you have chosen the Lord to be your God, to walk in his ways and to keep his precepts, commands and decrees, and to obey his voice. 18 And today the Lord has chosen you to be his own special people, as he promised you, so that you may keep all his commandments. 19So he will make you honorable among all the nations he created, and will make you the greatest in honor and glory, so that you may be the holy people of the Lord your God, as he promised.” – The Word of the Lord.

Blessed is the one who walks in the law of the Lord!

1. Blessed is the man who walks blamelessly in the law of the Lord! / Blessed is the man who keeps his precepts / and seeks God with all his heart! – R.

Gospel: Matthew 5:43-48

Hail, O Christ, image of the Father, / give us the full truth!

Now is the time of repentance, / now is the day of salvation (2 Cor 6:2). – R.

A reading from the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Matthew – At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: 43“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. 45In this way you will be children of your Father in heaven, for he makes his sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust. 46For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Don’t even tax collectors do the same? 47And if you greet only your brothers, what extraordinary thing are you doing? Do not even the pagans do the same? 48Therefore be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” – Word of salvation.

Reflection:

Jesus continues to teach the people to reinterpret ancient precepts. Today’s Gospel presents a huge step forward in the ethical field, teaching us that we must love everyone, friends and enemies alike. We must love everyone equally, without making any kind of distinction. This is the perfection we are exhorted to seek, the same perfection of our God, who “makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” In an agricultural context, such as the one in which Jesus preached, the sun and rain are essential goods, because it is their combination that makes abundant fruit possible. The God who loves us makes no distinction between people and allows us all to have access to the same kind of conditions. Loving one's enemies is a difficult precept to follow, but it will certainly bring many fruits, including happiness, personal fulfillment and holiness. God rewards all who follow His Commandments, as He promised Moses in the past.

A lei do Senhor é perfeita, converte os corações. O testemunho do Senhor é fiel, dá sabedoria aos pequenos (Sl 18,8).

Nesta celebração, peçamos a graça de viver sem restrições o mandamento do amor, tal como nos é ensinado por Jesus, trilhando o caminho da santidade.

Primeira Leitura: Deuteronômio 26,16-19

Leitura do livro do Deuteronômio – Moisés dirigiu a palavra ao povo de Israel e lhe disse: 16“Hoje, o Senhor teu Deus te manda cumprir esses preceitos e decretos. Guarda-os e observa-os com todo o teu coração e com toda a tua alma. 17Tu escolheste hoje o Senhor para ser o teu Deus, para seguires os seus caminhos e guardares seus preceitos, mandamentos e decretos, e para obedeceres à sua voz. 18E o Senhor te escolheu, hoje, para que sejas para ele um povo particular, como te prometeu, a fim de observares todos os seus mandamentos. 19Assim ele te fará ilustre entre todas as nações que criou e te tornará superior em honra e glória, a fim de que sejas o povo santo do Senhor teu Deus, como ele disse”. – Palavra do Senhor.

Feliz é quem na lei do Senhor Deus vai progredindo!

1. Feliz o homem sem pecado em seu caminho, / que na lei do Senhor Deus vai progredindo! / Feliz o homem que observa seus preceitos / e de todo o coração procura a Deus! – R.

2. Os vossos mandamentos vós nos destes / para serem fielmente observados. / Oxalá seja bem firme a minha vida / em cumprir vossa vontade e vossa lei! – R.

3. Quero louvar-vos com sincero coração, / pois aprendi as vossas justas decisões. / Quero guardar vossa vontade e vossa lei; / Senhor, não me deixeis desamparado! – R.

Evangelho: Mateus 5,43-48

Salve, ó Cristo, imagem do Pai, / a plena verdade nos comunicai!

Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus – Naquele tempo, disse Jesus aos seus discípulos: 43“Vós ouvistes o que foi dito: ‘Amarás o teu próximo e odiarás o teu inimigo!’ 44Eu, porém, vos digo, amai os vossos inimigos e rezai por aqueles que vos perseguem! 45Assim vos tornareis filhos do vosso Pai que está nos céus, porque ele faz nascer o sol sobre maus e bons e faz cair a chuva sobre justos e injustos. 46Porque, se amais somente aqueles que vos amam, que recompensa tereis? Os cobradores de impostos não fazem a mesma coisa? 47E se saudais somente os vossos irmãos, o que fazeis de extraordinário? Os pagãos não fazem a mesma coisa? 48Portanto, sede perfeitos como o vosso Pai celeste é perfeito”. – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

Jesus continua ensinando o povo a reinterpretar os preceitos antigos. O Evangelho de hoje apresenta um enorme passo avante no campo ético, ensinando-nos que é preciso amar a todos, amigos e inimigos. Devemos amar a todos de forma igual, sem fazer qualquer tipo de distinção. Essa é a perfeição que somos exortados a procurar, a mesma perfeição do nosso Deus, que “faz seu sol nascer sobre malvados e bons, e faz chover sobre justos e injustos”. Em contexto agrícola, como era aquele em que Jesus pregou, o sol e a chuva são bens essenciais, pois é sua combinação que possibilita frutos abundantes. O Deus que nos ama não faz distinção de pessoas e permite que todos tenhamos acesso ao mesmo tipo de condições. Amar os inimigos é um preceito difícil de seguir, mas que certamente trará muitos frutos, entre eles a felicidade, a realização pessoal e a santidade. Deus recompensa a todos que seguem seus Mandamentos, como prometeu no passado a Moisés.
