Here is the faithful and wise servant, to whom the Lord entrusted his family (Lk 12:42).

On this solemnity, we bless the Lord for the mission that Saint Joseph assumed as responsible for the Holy Family, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary and adoptive father of Jesus, serving them with his readiness and fidelity.

First Reading: 2 Samuel 7:4-5, 12-14, 16

A reading from the second book of Samuel – In those days, 4the word of the Lord came to Nathan: 5“Go and tell my servant David: ‘Thus says the Lord: 12When your days are over and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up a son after you and establish his kingdom. 13He will build a house for my Name, and I will establish his royal throne forever. 14I will be a father to him, and he will be a son to me. 16Your house and your kingdom will be established forever before me, and your throne will be established forever.’” – The word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm: 88(89)

Behold, his descendants will endure forever.

1. I will sing of your love, O Lord, forever; / from generation to generation I will sing of your truth. / For you have said, “Your love is guaranteed forever.” / And your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens. – R.

2. “I have made a covenant with my chosen one, / I have sworn an oath to David, my servant. / I will establish your line on your throne forever; / I will establish your kingdom from generation to generation.” – R.

Second Reading: Romans 4:13, 16-18, 22

A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans – Brothers and sisters: 13God promised Abraham and his descendants the world as an inheritance, not because of the law, but because of the righteousness that comes from faith. 16It is through faith that one becomes an heir. Therefore, the condition of heir is a grace, a free gift, and the promise of God remains valid for all Abraham’s descendants, whether those who hold to the law or those who rely solely on the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all. 17For it is written: “I have made you the father of many nations.” He is a father before God because he believed in God, who gives life to the dead and brings into being what was not. 18Against all human hope, he stood firm in hope and faith. Thus he became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” 22This faith of his was credited to him as righteousness. – The Word of the Lord.

Gospel: Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew – 16Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called the Messiah. 18The birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19Joseph, her husband, was a righteous man, and not wanting to make a secret of her, he decided to divorce her secretly. 20As Joseph considered this, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for it is from the Holy Spirit that she is with child. 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” 24When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him. – Word of salvation.

Reflection:

God chose Joseph to be the adoptive father of Jesus, entrusting his Son’s safety and education into his hands. An example of a just man, Joseph demonstrated profound faith, fulfilling his mission with total availability, even in the most disconcerting circumstances. His example of dedication and faith is always relevant, and it is no coincidence that Pope Francis dedicated an apostolic letter (Patris Corde) and a special year to Saint Joseph. For all these reasons, he is the universal patron of the Church, an advocate for Christian homes, and a model for workers. For those who want to know more about the figure and mission of this great saint, an excellent read is the book “Simply Joseph”, a biography written in the style of a novel that contemplates all the virtues and phases of the life of Mary’s husband and Jesus’ adoptive father.

Eis o servo fiel e prudente, a quem o Senhor confiou a sua família (Lc 12,42).

Nesta solenidade, bendizemos ao Senhor pela missão que São José assumiu como responsável pela Sagrada Família, esposo da Bem-aventurada Virgem Maria e pai adotivo de Jesus, servindo-os com sua prontidão e fidelidade.

Primeira Leitura: 2 Samuel 7,4-5.12-14.16

Leitura do segundo livro de Samuel – Naqueles dias, 4a palavra do Senhor foi dirigida a Natã nestes termos: 5“Vai dizer ao meu servo Davi: ‘Assim fala o Senhor: 12Quando chegar o fim dos teus dias e repousares com teus pais, então suscitarei, depois de ti, um filho teu e confirmarei a sua realeza. 13Será ele que construirá uma casa para o meu nome, e eu firmarei para sempre o seu trono real. 14Eu serei para ele um pai, e ele será para mim um filho. 16Tua casa e teu reino serão estáveis para sempre diante de mim, e teu trono será firme para sempre'”. – Palavra do Senhor.

2. “Eu firmei uma aliança com meu servo, meu eleito, / e eu fiz um juramento a Davi, meu servidor. / Para sempre, no teu trono, firmarei tua linhagem, / de geração em geração garantirei o teu reinado! – R.

Segunda Leitura: Romanos 4,13.16-18.22

Leitura da carta de São Paulo aos Romanos – Irmãos, 13não foi por causa da Lei, mas por causa da justiça que vem da fé, que Deus prometeu o mundo como herança a Abraão ou à sua descendência. 16É em virtude da fé que alguém se torna herdeiro. Logo, a condição de herdeiro é uma graça, um dom gratuito, e a promessa de Deus continua valendo para toda a descendência de Abraão, tanto para a descendência que se apega à Lei quanto para a que se apoia somente na fé de Abraão, que é o pai de todos nós. 17Pois está escrito: “Eu fiz de ti pai de muitos povos”. Ele é pai diante de Deus porque creu em Deus, que vivifica os mortos e faz existir o que antes não existia. 18Contra toda a humana esperança, ele firmou-se na esperança e na fé. Assim, tornou-se pai de muitos povos, conforme lhe fora dito: “Assim será a tua posteridade”. 22Esta sua atitude de fé lhe foi creditada como justiça. – Palavra do Senhor.

Felizes os que habitam vossa casa, / para sempre eles hão de vos louvar! (Sl 83,5) – R.

Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus – 16Jacó gerou José, o esposo de Maria, da qual nasceu Jesus, que é chamado o Cristo. 18A origem de Jesus Cristo foi assim: Maria, sua mãe, estava prometida em casamento a José e, antes de viverem juntos, ela ficou grávida pela ação do Espírito Santo. 19José, seu marido, era justo e, não querendo denunciá-la, resolveu abandonar Maria em segredo. 20Enquanto José pensava nisso, eis que o anjo do Senhor apareceu-lhe em sonho e lhe disse: “José, filho de Davi, não tenhas medo de receber Maria como tua esposa, porque ela concebeu pela ação do Espírito Santo. 21Ela dará à luz um filho, e tu lhe darás o nome de Jesus, pois ele vai salvar o seu povo dos seus pecados”. 24Quando acordou, José fez conforme o anjo do Senhor havia mandado. – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

Deus escolheu José para ser o pai adotivo de Jesus, confiando em suas mãos a segurança e educação do seu Filho. Exemplo de homem justo, José demonstrou ter profunda fé, cumprindo sua missão com disponibilidade total, mesmo nos acontecimentos mais desconcertantes. Seu exemplo de doação e fé é sempre atual, e não por acaso o papa Francisco dedicou uma carta apostólica (Patris Corde) e um ano especial a São José. Por tudo isso, é padroeiro universal da Igreja, advogado dos lares cristãos e modelo dos trabalhadores. Para quem quiser conhecer melhor a figura e a missão deste grande santo, uma excelente leitura é o livro “Simplesmente José”, biografia escrita em estilo de romance que contempla todas as virtudes e as fases da vida do esposo de Maria e pai adotivo de Jesus.
