Remember, O Lord, your mercies and your love, for they are everlasting. Let our enemies never rule over us; deliver us, O God of Israel, from all our troubles! (Ps 24:6, 2, 22)

The search for extraordinary signs has always fascinated certain religious groups. The liturgy invites us to perceive the signs of God in the “signs of the times”, which appear in the daily life of the community and society and invite us to conversion.

First Reading: Jonah 3:1-10

Reading of the Prophecy of Jonah – 1The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: 2“Arise, set out for the great city of Nineveh, and proclaim to it the message that I will tell you.” 3Jonah set out for Nineveh, as the Lord had commanded. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to cross it. 4Jonah entered the city, a day's journey, and he preached to the people, saying, "Forty more days, and Nineveh will be destroyed." 5The people of Nineveh believed God; they agreed to fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least. 6When the news reached the ears of the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne and laid aside his royal robe, put on sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7Then he proclaimed throughout Nineveh, as the king and his princes decreed: "No man or beast, cattle or sheep, shall taste anything; they shall neither eat nor drink water. 8Man and beast shall put on sackcloth, and men shall pray to God with all their might; each one shall turn away from his evil way and from his wicked practices. 9Perhaps God will turn back and forgive us and turn from his anger, so that we will not perish.” 10When God saw their works of repentance and that the Ninevites were turning from their evil ways, he had compassion and refrained from doing what he had threatened to do to them, but he did not do it. – The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm: 50(51)

O Lord, do not despise a repentant heart!

1. Have mercy, O my God, in your great love, cleanse me; / Wash me completely from my sin / and wipe away my guilt completely! – R.

2. Create in me a pure heart, / renew a steadfast spirit within me. / O Lord, do not cast me away from your presence / or take your Holy Spirit from me. – R.

3. For you do not delight in sacrifices, / and if I offer a burnt offering, you reject it. / My sacrifice is my repentant soul, / do not despise a repentant heart! – R.

Gospel: Luke 11,29-32

Jesus Christ, you are blessed, / you are the Anointed of God the Father!

Return to the Lord, your God, / he is good, compassionate and gracious (Joel 2,12ff). – R.

Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Luke – At that time, 29when the crowds gathered in great numbers, Jesus began to say: “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 30For just as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31On the day of judgment the queen of the South will rise up with the men of this generation and condemn them. For she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. And here is one greater than Solomon. 32On the day of judgment the men of Nineveh will rise up with this generation and condemn them. For they repented when they heard the preaching of Jonah. And here is one greater than Jonah.” – Word of salvation.

Reflection:

Today’s Gospel confirms that God is merciful and compassionate. Even where complete injustice and idolatry reign, transformation is possible. The example of the conversion of the Ninevites is recalled by Jesus to motivate the people of his time to change their lives and accept the saving message. Despite all the evil and deviant behavior of the Ninevites and the Jews of Jesus’ time, God saves them because he loves them. God does not want to condemn, but to save. He welcomes all who desire to be welcomed. The same example serves as motivation today for every Christian, throughout the Lenten season, to be inspired, to do penance and to return to the path of the Gospel. We are exhorted to acknowledge our sins, but above all, to remember that we were chosen by God to bear witness to his love and the salvation freely offered to all. The season of Lent is a propitious time for us to stand alongside the Ninevites and do penance with them.

Lembrai-vos, Senhor, de vossas misericórdias e de vosso amor, pois são eternos. Nunca dominem sobre nós os inimigos; libertai-nos, Deus de Israel, de todas as nossas angústias! (Sl 24,6.2.22)

A busca por sinais extraordinários sempre fascinou certos grupos religiosos. A liturgia nos convida a perceber os sinais de Deus nos “sinais dos tempos”, que surgem no dia a dia da comunidade e da sociedade e nos convidam à conversão.

Primeira Leitura: Jonas 3,1-10

Leitura da profecia de Jonas – 1A palavra do Senhor foi dirigida a Jonas pela segunda vez: 2“Levanta-te e põe-te a caminho da grande cidade de Nínive e anuncia-lhe a mensagem que eu te vou confiar”. 3Jonas pôs-se a caminho de Nínive, conforme a ordem do Senhor. Ora, Nínive era uma cidade muito grande; eram necessários três dias para ser atravessada. 4Jonas entrou na cidade, percorrendo o caminho de um dia; pregava ao povo, dizendo: “Ainda quarenta dias, e Nínive será destruída”. 5Os ninivitas acreditaram em Deus; aceitaram fazer jejum e vestiram sacos, desde o superior ao inferior. 6A pregação chegara aos ouvidos do rei de Nínive; ele levantou-se do trono e pôs de lado o manto real, vestiu-se de saco e sentou-se em cima de cinza. 7Em seguida, fez proclamar em Nínive, como decreto do rei e dos príncipes: “Homens e animais bovinos e ovinos não provarão nada! Não comerão e não beberão água. 8Homens e animais se cobrirão de sacos, e os homens rezarão a Deus com força; cada um deve afastar-se do mau caminho e de suas práticas perversas. 9Deus talvez volte atrás, para perdoar-nos e aplacar sua ira, e assim não venhamos a perecer”. 10Vendo Deus as suas obras de conversão e que os ninivitas se afastavam do mau caminho, compadeceu-se e suspendeu o mal que tinha ameaçado fazer-lhes, e não o fez. – Palavra do Senhor.

Salmo Responsorial: 50(51)

Ó Senhor, não desprezeis um coração arrependido!

1. Tende piedade, ó meu Deus, misericórdia! / Na imensidão de vosso amor, purificai-me! / Lavai-me todo inteiro do pecado / e apagai completamente a minha culpa! – R.

2. Criai em mim um coração que seja puro, / dai-me de novo um espírito decidido. / Ó Senhor, não me afasteis de vossa face / nem retireis de mim o vosso Santo Espírito! – R.

3. Pois não são de vosso agrado os sacrifícios, / e, se oferto um holocausto, o rejeitais. / Meu sacrifício é minha alma penitente, / não desprezeis um coração arrependido! – R.

Evangelho: Lucas 11,29-32

Jesus Cristo, sois bendito, / sois o Ungido de Deus Pai!

Voltai ao Senhor, vosso Deus, / ele é bom, compassivo e clemente (Jl 2,12s). – R.

Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Lucas – Naquele tempo, 29quando as multidões se reuniram em grande quantidade, Jesus começou a dizer: “Esta geração é uma geração má. Ela busca um sinal, mas nenhum sinal lhe será dado, a não ser o sinal de Jonas. 30Com efeito, assim como Jonas foi um sinal para os ninivitas, assim também será o Filho do Homem para esta geração. 31No dia do julgamento, a rainha do Sul se levantará juntamente com os homens desta geração e os condenará. Porque ela veio de uma terra distante para ouvir a sabedoria de Salomão. E aqui está quem é maior do que Salomão. 32No dia do julgamento, os ninivitas se levantarão juntamente com esta geração e a condenarão. Porque eles se converteram quando ouviram a pregação de Jonas. E aqui está quem é maior do que Jonas”. – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

O Evangelho de hoje confirma que Deus é misericordioso e compassivo. Mesmo onde reinam a completa injustiça e a idolatria, é possível haver transformação. O exemplo de conversão dos ninivitas é recordado por Jesus para motivar o povo de seu tempo a mudar de vida e aceitar a mensagem salvífica. Apesar de toda a maldade e de todo o desvio de comportamento dos ninivitas e dos judeus do tempo de Jesus, Deus os salva, pois os ama. Deus não quer condenar, mas salvar. Acolhe a todos que desejam ser acolhidos. O mesmo exemplo serve de motivação hoje para que cada cristão, ao longo do tempo quaresmal, se inspire, faça penitência e retome o caminho do Evangelho. Somos exortados a reconhecer nossos pecados, mas, sobretudo, recordar que fomos escolhidos por Deus para testemunhar seu amor e a salvação oferecida a todos gratuitamente. O tempo da Quaresma é propício para nos colocarmos ao lado dos ninivitas e com eles fazermos penitência.
