Fasting is a practice proposed to Christians and should be seen as an expression of conversion and a sign of charity. During this Lenten season, let us also embrace it as a sign of preparation for Easter.

First Reading: Isaiah 58:1-9

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah – Thus says the Lord God: 1“Cry out loud and without ceasing, lift up your voice like a trumpet, and denounce the crimes of my people and the sins of the house of Jacob. 2They seek me daily and desire to know my ways, like a people who do righteousness and do not forsake the law of God. They demand fair judgments from me and want to be close to God: 3“Why did you not rejoice when we fasted, and did you ignore it when we humbled ourselves?” It is because on the day of your fast you do business and oppress your employees. 4It is because while you fast, you engage in litigation and quarreling and merciless aggression. Do not fast in this spirit, if you want your petition to be heard in heaven. 5Is this the kind of fast that I love, the day on which a person humbles himself? Is it to bow down one’s head like a reed and to lie in sackcloth and ashes? Do you call this a fast, a day of thanksgiving to the Lord? 6Is it not another kind of fast that I love: to break the chains of injustice, to untie the yokes, to set free those who are bound, to break every form of bondage? 7Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, to welcome the poor and the stranger into your home? When you meet the naked, clothe him, and do not despise your own flesh. 8Then your light will shine like the dawn, and your health will be restored quickly; your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will follow you. 9Then you will call to the Lord, and he will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’” – The Word of the Lord.

O Lord, do not despise a contrite heart!

1. Have mercy, O my God, in your great love, cleanse me; / Wash me completely from my sin / and blot out my guilt completely! – R.

Gospel: Matthew 9,14-15

Hail, Christ, light of life, / companion in sharing!

Seek good, not evil, for then you will live; / then the Lord, our God, will be with you! (Amos 5,14) – R.

Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Matthew – At that time, 14John’s disciples approached Jesus and asked, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not?” 15Jesus said to them, “Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn while the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them. Then they will fast.” – Word of salvation.

Reflection:

The central theme of today is fasting. Like any other religious practice, fasting can become something purely external, without transforming the heart of the human being. Jesus’ intention is not to abolish fasting, but to renew its meaning. To those who criticize the disciples for not following the precept of fasting, Jesus gives a very clear answer: his presence is a reason to celebrate; after he leaves, the disciples will fast. The fast that everyone should practice is revealed by the prophet Isaiah: to set the oppressed free, to free the captives, to fight against every form of injustice, to share bread with the hungry, to give shelter to the poor. Christ invites Christians to renew their hearts by abstaining from evil inclinations, so that they may fully savor the Lord’s Passover, the food for eternal life. For this reason, the Church is invited to fast throughout the Lenten season, so that the deprivation of physical food may lead us to abstain from the leaven of sin.

Escutai-me, Senhor Deus, tende piedade! Sede, Senhor, meu abrigo protetor! (Sl 29,11)

O jejum é prática proposta aos cristãos e deve ser visto como expressão de conversão e sinal de caridade. Neste tempo quaresmal, o assumamos também como sinal de preparação para a Páscoa.

Primeira Leitura: Isaías 58,1-9

Leitura do livro do profeta Isaías – Assim fala o Senhor Deus: 1“Grita forte, sem cessar, levanta a voz como trombeta e denuncia os crimes do meu povo e os pecados da casa de Jacó. 2Buscam-me cada dia e desejam conhecer meus propósitos, como gente que pratica a justiça e não abandonou a lei de Deus. Exigem de mim julgamentos justos e querem estar na proximidade de Deus: 3‘Por que não te regozijaste quando jejuávamos e o ignoraste quando nos humilhávamos?’ É porque, no dia do vosso jejum, tratais de negócios e oprimis os vossos empregados. 4É porque, ao mesmo tempo que jejuais, fazeis litígios e brigas e agressões impiedosas. Não façais jejum com esse espírito, se quereis que vosso pedido seja ouvido no céu. 5Acaso é esse jejum que aprecio, o dia em que uma pessoa se mortifica? Trata-se talvez de curvar a cabeça como junco e de deitar-se em saco e sobre cinza? Acaso chamas a isso jejum, dia grato ao Senhor? 6Acaso o jejum que prefiro não é outro: quebrar as cadeias injustas, desligar as amarras do jugo, tornar livres os que estão detidos, enfim, romper todo tipo de sujeição? 7Não é repartir o pão com o faminto, acolher em casa os pobres e peregrinos? Quando encontrares um nu, cobre-o e não desprezes a tua carne. 8Então brilhará tua luz como a aurora e tua saúde há de recuperar-se mais depressa; à frente caminhará tua justiça e a glória do Senhor te seguirá. 9Então invocarás o Senhor, e ele te atenderá, pedirás socorro e ele dirá: ‘Eis-me aqui'”. – Palavra do Senhor.

Salmo Responsorial: 50(51)

Ó Senhor, não desprezeis um coração arrependido!

1. Tende piedade, ó meu Deus, misericórdia! / Na imensidão de vosso amor, purificai-me! / Lavai-me todo inteiro do pecado / e apagai completamente a minha culpa! – R.

2. Eu reconheço toda a minha iniquidade, / o meu pecado está sempre à minha frente. / Foi contra vós, só contra vós, que eu pequei / e pratiquei o que é mau aos vossos olhos! – R.

Evangelho: Mateus 9,14-15

Salve, Cristo, luz da vida, / companheiro na partilha!

Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus – Naquele tempo, 14os discípulos de João aproximaram-se de Jesus e perguntaram: “Por que razão nós e os fariseus praticamos jejuns, mas os teus discípulos não?” 15Disse-lhes Jesus: “Por acaso, os amigos do noivo podem estar de luto enquanto o noivo está com eles? Dias virão em que o noivo será tirado do meio deles. Então, sim, eles jejuarão”. – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

O tema central de hoje é o jejum. Como qualquer outra prática religiosa, o jejum pode tornar-se algo puramente exterior, sem transformar o coração do ser humano. A intenção de Jesus não é abolir o jejum, mas renovar seu significado. Aos que criticam os discípulos por não seguirem o preceito do jejum, Jesus dá uma resposta bastante clara: sua presença é motivo de festa; depois que ele partir, os discípulos jejuarão. O jejum que todos devem praticar é revelado pelo profeta Isaías: pôr em liberdade os oprimidos, libertar os cativos, lutar contra toda forma de injustiça, repartir o pão com quem tem fome, dar abrigo ao pobre. Cristo convida os cristãos a renovarem o próprio coração, abstendo-se das más inclinações, para que possam saborear plenamente a Páscoa do Senhor, alimento para a vida eterna. Por isso, a Igreja é convidada a jejuar ao longo de todo o tempo quaresmal, para que a privação do alimento físico nos conduza à abstinência dos fermentos do pecado.
