1ST WEEK OF LENT

Deliver me, O Lord, from my afflictions; see my smallness and my toil, and forgive all my sins (Ps 24:17ff).
God is pleased when a sinner repents, abandons his evil ways and returns to Him. In this liturgy, we are invited to praise the Lord’s mercy, living reconciliation and fraternity.
First Reading: Ezekiel 18:21-28
Reading from the prophecy of Ezekiel – Thus says the Lord: 21“If the wicked man repents of all the sins he has committed, and keeps all my statutes, and does what is right and just, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 22None of the sins he has committed will be remembered against him. He shall live because of the righteousness he has practiced. 23Do I take pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Lord God. Do I not desire that he should change his ways and live? 24But if a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does evil, following all the detestable practices of the wicked, can he do this and live? The righteousness he has practiced will no longer be remembered. Because of his unfaithfulness and the sin he has committed, he will die. 25But you say, ‘The Lord’s ways are not right.’ Hear, you house of Israel: Is it my ways that are not right, or rather your ways that are not right? 26When a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does evil and dies, it is because of the evil he has done that he dies. 27When a wicked person turns away from his wickedness and does evil and dies, he dies. 28When a wicked person turns away from his wickedness and does what is right and just, he lives. 28If he turns away from all his sins, he will surely live; he will not die.”—Declares the Lord.

Gospel: Matthew 5,20-26
Hail, O Christ, image of the Father, / communicate the full truth to us!
Cast away all your iniquity! / Create within yourselves a new spirit and a new heart! (Ez 18,31) – R.
Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Matthew – At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: 20“Unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. 21You have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘You shall not murder; whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22But I tell you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever says to his brother, ‘You scoundrel!’ will be liable to judgment; whoever calls his brother a fool will be liable to hell fire. 23Therefore, when you are offering your gift to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24leave your gift there in front of the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother. Then go and present your gift. 25Seek to be reconciled with your adversary while he is walking with you to the court. Otherwise, your adversary will hand you over to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison. 26Truly, I say to you, you will not come out until you have paid the last penny.” – Word of salvation.
Reflection:
Jesus presents a new way of understanding and living the Law. The essential thing is not the rituals and prohibitions, but the inner attitude of each human being and the way we relate to our neighbor. The commandment “do not kill,” for example, also requires respect for others, attention, good coexistence, justice, and so on. Therefore, when we go to confession, it is not enough to say “I did not kill or steal”. We need to examine our intentions and attitudes in our daily lives much more deeply. Speaking of confession, Lent is the ideal time to approach the sacrament of reconciliation. The liturgy helps us to examine our conscience in more detail, also dedicating time to prayer and penance. God wants life, not death; joy, not sadness. That is why he gives us many opportunities to convert and abandon sin. (Day by Day with the Gospel 2025 - PAULUS) 13 – THURSDAY 15 – SATURDAY

Livrai-me, Senhor, das minhas aflições, vede minha pequenez e minha fadiga e perdoai todos os meus pecados (Sl 24,17s).
Deus se compraz quando um pecador se arrepende, abandona o mau caminho e se volta para ele. Somos convidados, nesta liturgia, a louvar a misericórdia do Senhor, vivendo a reconciliação e a fraternidade.
Primeira Leitura: Ezequiel 18,21-28
Leitura da profecia de Ezequiel – Assim fala o Senhor: 21“Se o ímpio se arrepender de todos os pecados cometidos, e guardar todas as minhas leis, e praticar o direito e a justiça, viverá com certeza e não morrerá. 22Nenhum dos pecados que cometeu será lembrado contra ele. Viverá por causa da justiça que praticou. 23Será que eu tenho prazer na morte do ímpio? – oráculo do Senhor Deus. Não desejo, antes, que mude de conduta e viva? 24Mas, se o justo se desviar de sua justiça e praticar o mal, imitando todas as práticas detestáveis feitas pelo ímpio, poderá fazer isso e viver? Da justiça que ele praticou, nada mais será lembrado. Por causa da infidelidade e do pecado que cometeu, por causa disso morrerá. 25Mas vós andais dizendo: ‘A conduta do Senhor não é correta’. Ouvi, vós da casa de Israel: é a minha conduta que não é correta ou, antes, é a vossa conduta que não é correta? 26Quando um justo se desvia da justiça, pratica o mal e morre, é por causa do mal praticado que ele morre. 27Quando um ímpio se arrepende da maldade que praticou e observa o direito e a justiça, conserva a própria vida. 28Arrependendo-se de todos os seus pecados, com certeza viverá; não morrerá”. – Palavra do Senhor.

Evangelho: Mateus 5,20-26

Lançai para bem longe toda a vossa iniquidade! / Criai em vós um novo espírito e um novo coração! (Ez 18,31) – R.
Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus – Naquele tempo, disse Jesus aos seus discípulos: 20“Se a vossa justiça não for maior que a justiça dos mestres da Lei e dos fariseus, vós não entrareis no Reino dos Céus. 21Vós ouvistes o que foi dito aos antigos: ‘Não matarás! Quem matar será condenado pelo tribunal’. 22Eu, porém, vos digo, todo aquele que se encoleriza com seu irmão será réu em juízo; quem disser ao seu irmão ‘patife!’ será condenado pelo tribunal; quem chamar o irmão de tolo será condenado ao fogo do inferno. 23Portanto, quando tu estiveres levando a tua oferta para o altar e ali te lembrares que teu irmão tem alguma coisa contra ti, 24deixa a tua oferta ali diante do altar e vai primeiro reconciliar-te com o teu irmão. Só então vai apresentar a tua oferta. 25Procura reconciliar-te com teu adversário, enquanto caminha contigo para o tribunal. Senão o adversário te entregará ao juiz, o juiz te entregará ao oficial de justiça, e tu serás jogado na prisão. 26Em verdade eu te digo, dali não sairás, enquanto não pagares o último centavo”. – Palavra da salvação.
Reflexão:
Jesus apresenta um novo modo de compreender e viver a Lei. O essencial não são os rituais e as proibições, mas a atitude interior de cada ser humano e o modo como nos relacionamos com nosso próximo. O mandamento “não matar”, por exemplo, exige também o respeito pelo outro, a atenção, a boa convivência, a justiça e assim por diante. Portanto, quando formos nos confessar, não basta dizer “não matei e não roubei”. É preciso fazer um exame muito mais profundo, sobre nossas intenções e atitudes no dia a dia. Por falar em confissão, a Quaresma é o período ideal para
nos aproximarmos do sacramento da reconciliação. A liturgia nos ajuda a fazer um exame de consciência mais detalhado, dedicando tempo também à oração e à penitência. Deus quer a vida, e não a morte; a alegria, e não a tristeza. Por isso nos dá muitas oportunidades para nos convertermos e abandonarmos o pecado.
