Guide my steps, O Lord, according to your word, and let no injustice have dominion over me! (Ps 118:133)

In this celebration, let us renew our commitment not to let anything that we are taught about the law of God, transmitted to the people by Moses and fully fulfilled by Jesus, slip from our hearts.

First Reading: Deuteronomy 4:1, 5-9

A reading from the Book of Deuteronomy – Moses spoke to the people, saying: 1“Now, Israel, listen to the laws and decrees that I am teaching you to observe, so that by doing them you may live and enter into the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, is giving you. 5See, I have taught you laws and decrees just as the Lord my God commanded me, so that you may observe them in the land that you are entering and possessing. 6You must observe them, for in them is your wisdom and understanding in the sight of the nations, so that when they hear all these laws they may say, ‘Surely this great nation is wise and understanding!’ 7For what great nation is there whose gods are as close to them as the Lord our God is whenever we call upon him? 8And what great nation is there that has laws and decrees as just as this law that is today? I set before your eyes? 9But be careful not to forget anything you have seen with your own eyes, and do not let anything slip from your heart all the days of your life. but teach it to your children and grandchildren.” – The Word of the Lord.

Glorify the Lord, Jerusalem!

1. Glorify the Lord, Jerusalem! / Sing praises to your God, O Zion! / For he has strengthened your gates with security / and blessed your children within you. – R.

2. He sends his commandments to the earth, / and his word runs swiftly. / He makes snow fall like wool / and scatters frost like ashes. – R.

3. He proclaims his word to Jacob, / his precepts and his laws to Israel. / No people has received such love, / to no other has he revealed his precepts. – R.

Gospel: Matthew 5:17-19

Glory to Christ, the eternal Word of the Father, who is love!

Lord, your words are spirit, they are life; / you alone have the words of life eternal! (Jn 6:63, 68) – R.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew – At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: 17“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18Truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter, not the smallest stroke of a pen, will be removed from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever practices and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.” – Word of salvation.

Reflection:

Before entering the Promised Land, the Hebrew people received from God the Ten Commandments, a fundamental Law that guides personal and social life, as it encompasses its essential elements. They are norms for the people to live harmoniously, respecting God and their neighbor. Jesus did not come to abolish this Law, but to rescue its original meaning, which is why he criticizes the way many interpreted it. Jesus brings the Law and the Prophets to perfection, continuing the Old Testament and, at the same time, surpassing it, as a concrete expression of God’s love for humanity. The Gospel (and the Sermon on the Mount, in particular) represents the new application of the Law desired by Jesus, which is why it is the duty of every Christian to observe it and put it into practice.

Guiai os meus passos, Senhor, segundo a vossa palavra, e que nenhuma injustiça domine sobre mim! (Sl 118,133)

Nesta celebração renovemos o compromisso de não deixarmos escapar do coração nada do que nos é ensinado acerca da lei de Deus, transmitida ao povo por Moisés e cumprida plenamente por Jesus.

Primeira Leitura: Deuteronômio 4,1.5-9

Leitura do livro do Deuteronômio – Moisés falou ao povo, dizendo: 1“Agora, Israel, ouve as leis e os decretos que eu vos ensino a cumprir, para que, fazendo-o, vivais e entreis na posse da terra prometida que o Senhor Deus de vossos pais vos vai dar. 5Eis que vos ensinei leis e decretos conforme o Senhor meu Deus me ordenou, para que os pratiqueis na terra em que ides entrar e da qual tomareis posse. 6Vós os guardareis, pois, e os poreis em prática, porque neles está vossa sabedoria e inteligência perante os povos, para que, ouvindo todas estas leis, digam: ‘Na verdade, é sábia e inteligente esta grande nação!’ 7Pois qual é a grande nação cujos deuses lhe são tão próximos como o Senhor nosso Deus, sempre que o invocamos? 8E que nação haverá tão grande que tenha leis e decretos tão justos, como esta lei que hoje vos ponho diante dos olhos? 9Mas toma cuidado! Procura com grande zelo não te esqueceres de tudo o que viste com os próprios olhos e nada deixes escapar do teu coração por todos os dias de tua vida; antes, ensina-o a teus filhos e netos”. – Palavra do Senhor.

Evangelho: Mateus 5,17-19

Glória a Cristo, Palavra eterna do Pai, que é amor!

Senhor, tuas palavras são espírito, são vida; / só tu tens palavras de vida eterna! (Jo 6,63.68) – R.

Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus – Naquele tempo, disse Jesus aos seus discípulos: 17“Não penseis que vim abolir a Lei e os Profetas. Não vim para abolir, mas para dar-lhes pleno cumprimento. 18Em verdade eu vos digo, antes que o céu e a terra deixem de existir, nem uma só letra ou vírgula serão tiradas da Lei, sem que tudo se cumpra. 19Portanto, quem desobedecer a um só desses mandamentos, por menor que seja, e ensinar os outros a fazerem o mesmo será considerado o menor no Reino dos Céus. Porém quem os praticar e ensinar será considerado grande no Reino dos Céus”. – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

Antes de entrar na Terra Prometida, o povo hebreu recebeu de Deus os Dez Mandamentos, Lei fundamental que orienta a vida pessoal e social, pois engloba seus elementos essenciais. São normas para o povo viver harmoniosamente, respeitando a Deus e ao próximo. Jesus não veio abolir essa Lei, mas resgatar seu sentido original, por isso critica o modo como muitos a interpretavam. Jesus leva à perfeição a Lei e os Profetas, dando continuidade ao Antigo Testamento e, ao mesmo tempo, superando-o, como expressão concreta do amor de Deus pela humanidade. O Evangelho (e o Sermão da montanha, de modo particular) representa a nova aplicação da Lei querida por Jesus, por isso é dever de todo cristão observá-lo e pô-lo em prática.
