Jesus declares that a prophet is not well-received in his own home, but verse 45 indicates something else, a contradiction, showing that the Galileans welcomed Him. The contradiction in the verses is not due to an error on the part of the author, but rather to something intentional. The joy of the Galileans is not linked to the person of Jesus himself, but only to the signs that He performed in Jerusalem. The Galilean people also want to see signs in Galilee. Jesus himself says: “Unless you see signs and wonders, you will not believe” (48). This is a faith not in the person of Jesus, but in what He can do; a faith that is born of spectacle, of the extraordinary, of the fascination of visibility.

2. Jesus demands the opposite. For Him, faith must be a total adherence to His Person and His work, a placing of oneself absolutely at the service of love, truth and life, an emptying of oneself, embracing the cross each day and becoming a disciple of the Truth. Much more than signs, Jesus expects that both the Galileans and anyone else in the whole world will believe in His Word, as did the king’s official, who, despite being a pagan, was able to see the Word of Salvation, truly believed in it and joined Jesus with his entire family.

3. This official did not embrace the Jewish faith. So, what other faith did he embrace? What does it mean to embrace faith? Certainly, following the Person of Jesus Christ and His teachings, living as He lived, is the most important expression of faith of all time. The apostles had no doubts about this after the resurrection of the Master. To accept the faith of the Church of Jesus Christ is to accept a PERSON into your heart, the Savior, Lord and King, the Word made flesh, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not created, consubstantial with the Father. To accept the apostolic faith is to believe that God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit; it is to believe in love as oblation, the gift of oneself for the good of others; is to believe that Jesus is the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE.

Trata-se de uma fé não na pessoa de Jesus, mas naquilo que Ele pode fazer; uma fé que nasce do espetáculo, do extraordinário, do fascínio da visibilidade.

2. Jesus exige o contrário. Para Ele, a fé deve ser uma adesão total à sua Pessoa e à sua obra, um colocar-se absolutamente a serviço do amor, da verdade e da vida, um esvaziar-se de si mesmo, abraçando a cruz cada dia e fazendo-se discípulo da Verdade. Muito mais que sinais, Jesus espera que tanto galileus quanto qualquer um, no mundo inteiro, creia na Sua Palavra, como fez o funcionário do rei, que, apesar de ser pagão, foi capaz de enxergar a Palavra da Salvação, acreditou verdadeiramente nela e aderiu a Jesus com toda sua família.

3. Esse funcionário não abraçou a fé judaica. Então, que outra fé ele abraçou? O que se quer dizer com abraçou a fé? Certamente, seguir a Pessoa de Jesus Cristo e Seus ensinamentos, vivendo como Ele viveu, é a mais importante expressão de fé de todos os tempos. Os apóstolos não tinham dúvidas disso depois da ressurreição do Mestre. Acolher a fé da Igreja de Jesus Cristo é acolher uma PESSOA no seu coração, o Salvador, Senhor e Rei, o Verbo feito carne, Deus de Deus, Luz da Luz, Deus verdadeiro de Deus verdadeiro, gerado não criado, consubstancial ao Pai. Acolher a fé apostólica é crer que Deus é Pai, Filho e Espírito Santo; é crer no amor como oblatividade, dom de si mesmo para o bem do outro; é crer que Jesus é o CAMINHO, a VERDADE e a VIDA.
