The liturgy reminds us that Jesus’ teachings must be brought to all people with words and, above all, with deeds. It is up to pastoral agents and community leaders to be the first to cultivate a spirit of obedience and faithfulness to this commitment.

First Reading: Isaiah 1:10.16-20

A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah – 10Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the teaching of our God, you people of Gomorrah. 16Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean. Remove the evil of your doings from before me. Cease to do evil! 17Learn to do good! Seek justice, reprove the oppressor. Plead for the fatherless, plead for the widow. 18Come, let us reason together, says the Lord. Gospel: Matthew 23,1-12

Hail, O Christ, image of the Father, / you communicate the full truth to us!

Cast away all your iniquity! / Create within you a new spirit and a new heart! (Ezekiel 18:31) – R.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew – At that time, 1Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples and said to them: 2“The teachers of the law and the Pharisees have authority to interpret the law of Moses. 3So you must do and observe everything they tell you. But do not imitate their actions, for they talk but do not practice. 4They tie up heavy burdens and place them on others’ shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with so much as a finger. 5They do all their actions just to be seen by others. They wear broad sashes with Scripture on their foreheads and arms, and they put long fringes on their garments. 6They love the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues. 7They love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi.’ 8But you, do not be called “Rabbi,” for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9Do not call anyone on earth “father,” for you have one Father, who is in heaven. 10Do not be called “master,” for you have one Master, even Christ. 11But the greatest among you must be your servant. 12Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” – Word of salvation.

Reflection:

Jesus criticizes the Pharisees and the scribes because they are inconsistent: they preach, but do not live the precepts. The new people of God must be born with a different attitude, that is, Christians must act coherently, always following the example of Jesus, because humility is where Christian wealth lies. We are the new people, and therefore our actions and words must reflect the teaching we received from Jesus. Today's Gospel also invites us to change the pyramidal logic of society, not by destroying the pyramid, but by inverting it, because the greatest among us must be servants of all, just as Jesus did. Those who reveal the greatest qualities must serve their brothers by the example of their lives, and not only by the authority of their words.

Iluminai meus olhos, Senhor, para que eu não adormeça no sono da morte. Que meu inimigo não possa dizer: triunfei sobre ele (Sl 12,4s).

A liturgia nos recorda que os ensinamentos de Jesus devem ser levados a todas as pessoas com palavras e, sobretudo, com obras. Cabe aos agentes de pastoral e às lideranças da comunidade serem os primeiros a cultivar um espírito obediente e fiel a esse compromisso.

Primeira Leitura: Isaías 1,10.16-20

Leitura do livro do profeta Isaías – 10Ouvi a palavra do Senhor, magistrados de Sodoma, prestai ouvidos ao ensinamento do nosso Deus, povo de Gomorra. 16Lavai-vos, purificai-vos. Evangelho: Mateus 23,1-12

Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus – Naquele tempo, 1Jesus falou às multidões e aos seus discípulos e lhes disse: 2“Os mestres da Lei e os fariseus têm autoridade para interpretar a Lei de Moisés. 3Por isso, deveis fazer e observar tudo o que eles dizem. Mas não imiteis suas ações! Pois eles falam e não praticam. 4Amarram pesados fardos e os colocam nos ombros dos outros, mas eles mesmos não estão dispostos a movê-los nem sequer com um dedo. 5Fazem todas as suas ações só para serem vistos pelos outros. Eles usam faixas largas, com trechos da Escritura, na testa e nos braços e põem na roupa longas franjas. 6Gostam de lugar de honra nos banquetes e dos primeiros lugares nas sinagogas. 7Gostam de ser cumprimentados nas praças públicas e de serem chamados de mestre. 8Quanto a vós, nunca vos deixeis chamar de mestre, pois um só é vosso Mestre e todos vós sois irmãos. 9Na terra, não chameis a ninguém de pai, pois um só é vosso Pai, aquele que está nos céus. 10Não deixeis que vos chamem de guias, pois um só é o vosso Guia, Cristo. 11Pelo contrário, o maior dentre vós deve ser aquele que vos serve. 12Quem se exaltar será humilhado, e quem se humilhar será exaltado”. – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

Jesus critica os fariseus e os escribas porque são incoerentes: pregam, mas não vivem os preceitos. O novo povo de Deus deve nascer com uma atitude diferente, ou seja, o cristão deve agir com coerência, seguindo sempre o exemplo de Jesus, pois é na humildade que está a riqueza cristã. Nós somos o novo povo, e por isso nossas ações e nossas palavras devem refletir o ensinamento que recebemos de Jesus. O Evangelho de hoje nos convida ainda a mudar a lógica piramidal da sociedade, não destruindo a pirâmide, mas invertendo-a, pois os maiores entre nós devem ser os servos de todos, à semelhança do que fez Jesus. Aquele que revela maiores qualidades deve servir seus irmãos pelo exemplo de vida, e não apenas pela autoridade da palavra.
