1ST WEEK OF LENT

Give ear, O Lord, to my words; listen to my cry. Be attentive to my plea, O my King and my God! (Ps 5:2)

In this Eucharist, let us celebrate the Lord, who hears and defends the people who call upon him with a sincere and trusting heart. He is the Father and the source from which all that is good for people’s lives comes.

First Reading: Esther 4:17

A reading from the Book of Esther – In those days, 17when Queen Esther was afraid of the approaching danger of death, she sought refuge in the Lord. 17pShe prostrated herself on the ground from morning until evening, together with her servants, and said: 17q“God of Abraham, God of Isaac, and God of Jacob, you are blessed. Come to my aid, for I am alone and have no one but you, O Lord, 17rfor I have exposed myself to danger. 17aaO Lord, I have heard from the books of my ancestors that you, O Lord, deliver to the end all who are dear to you. 17bbNow therefore help me, O Lord my God, who am alone and have no one but you. 17ggCome to the aid of my orphanhood. Put an appealing word in my mouth when I stand before the lion, and change my heart to hate the one who attacks us, so that he may perish with all his accomplices. 17hhAnd deliver us from the hand of our enemies. Turn our mourning into joy and our sorrow into well-being.” – The word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm: 137(138)

On the day I cried out, / you answered me, O Lord!

1. O Lord, I give you thanks from my heart, / for you have heard the words of my lips! / I will sing to you before your angels / and I will bow down before your temple. – R.

2. I thank you for your love, your truth, / for you have done much more than you promised; / on the day I cried out, you heard me / and strengthened my soul. – R.

Gospel: Matthew 7,7-12

Hail, O Christ, image of the Father, / you communicate the full truth to us!

Create in me a pure heart, / give me back the joy of being saved! (Ps 50:12, 14) – R.

Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Matthew – At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: 7“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. 8For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 9Which of you would give his son a stone when he asks for bread? 10Or give him a snake when he asks for a fish? 11If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him! 12Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the Law and the Prophets.” – Word of salvation.

Reflection:

In a few words, Jesus summarizes all the teachings of the Law and the Prophets, giving us a new ethical imperative: do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Jesus also renews the power of prayer, confirming that the Father gives his children everything they ask of him, as long as it is something that springs from the depths of our hearts, and not the fruit of a manipulative and self-interested search for God. It is God's plan that must always be in our thoughts and that we must make a reality in our lives. Prayer gives us strength and confidence to face the dangers of life, as we see in the example of Esther, who trusted God completely in a moment of danger and was answered.

Prestai ouvidos, Senhor, às minhas palavras, escutai o meu clamor. Ficai atento ao meu apelo, ó meu Rei e meu Deus! (Sl 5,2s)

Nesta Eucaristia, celebremos o Senhor, que atende e defende o povo que o invoca de coração sincero e confiante. Ele é Pai e a fonte donde provém tudo o que é bom para a vida das pessoas.

Primeira Leitura: Ester 4,17

Leitura do livro de Ester – Naqueles dias, 17na rainha Ester, temendo o perigo de morte que se aproximava, buscou refúgio no Senhor. 17pProstrou-se por terra desde a manhã até o anoitecer, juntamente com suas servas, e disse: 17q“Deus de Abraão, Deus de Isaac e Deus de Jacó, tu és bendito. Vem em meu socorro, pois estou só e não tenho outro defensor fora de ti, Senhor, 17rpois eu mesma me expus ao perigo. 17aaSenhor, eu ouvi, dos livros de meus antepassados, que tu libertas, Senhor, até o fim, todos os que te são caros. 17bbAgora, pois, ajuda-me, a mim que estou sozinha e não tenho mais ninguém senão a ti, Senhor meu Deus. 17ggVem, pois, em auxílio de minha orfandade. Põe em meus lábios um discurso atraente, quando eu estiver diante do leão, e muda o seu coração para que odeie aquele que nos ataca, para que este pereça com todos os seus cúmplices. 17hhE livra-nos da mão de nossos inimigos. Transforma nosso luto em alegria e nossas dores em bem-estar”. – Palavra do Senhor.

Salmo Responsorial: 137(138)

Naquele dia em que gritei, / vós me escutastes, ó Senhor!

1. Ó Senhor, de coração eu vos dou graças, / porque ouvistes as palavras dos meus lábios! / Perante os vossos anjos vou cantar-vos / e ante o vosso templo vou prostrar-me. – R.

2. Eu agradeço vosso amor, vossa verdade, / porque fizestes muito mais que prometestes; / naquele dia em que gritei, vós me escutastes / e aumentastes o vigor da minha alma. – R.

3. Estendereis o vosso braço em meu auxílio / e havereis de me salvar com vossa destra. / Completai em mim a obra começada; / ó Senhor, vossa bondade é para sempre! / Eu vos peço: não deixeis inacabada / esta obra que fizeram vossas mãos! – R.

Evangelho: Mateus 7,7-12

Salve, ó Cristo, imagem do Pai, / a plena verdade nos comunicai!

Criai em mim um coração que seja puro, / dai-me de novo a alegria de ser salvo! (Sl 50,12.14) – R.

Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Mateus – Naquele tempo, disse Jesus aos seus discípulos: 7“Pedi e vos será dado! Procurai e achareis! Batei e a porta vos será aberta! 8Pois todo aquele que pede, recebe; quem procura, encontra; e a quem bate, a porta será aberta. 9Quem de vós dá ao filho uma pedra quando ele pede um pão? 10Ou lhe dá uma cobra quando ele pede um peixe? 11Ora, se vós, que sois maus, sabeis dar coisas boas a vossos filhos, quanto mais vosso Pai que está nos céus dará coisas boas aos que lhe pedirem! 12Tudo quanto quereis que os outros vos façam, fazei também a eles. Nisto consiste a Lei e os Profetas”. – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

Em poucas palavras, Jesus resume todo o ensinamento da Lei e dos Profetas, dando-nos um novo imperativo ético: façam às pessoas o mesmo que vocês desejam que elas façam a vocês. Jesus renova ainda a força da oração, confirmando que o Pai dá a seus filhos tudo aquilo que lhe é pedido, sempre que for algo que brota do fundo do nosso coração, e não fruto de uma procura manipuladora e interessada de Deus. É o projeto de Deus que deve estar sempre no nosso pensamento e que devemos tornar realidade em nossa vida. A oração nos dá força e confiança para enfrentarmos os perigos da vida, como vemos no exemplo de Ester, que confiou plenamente em Deus no momento de perigo e foi atendida.
