As we celebrate the solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, let us give thanks to God for Mary’s yes! As an obedient servant of the divine will, she, with her “let it be done,” inaugurated a new stage in the history of humanity, conceiving, through the work of the Holy Spirit, the Savior of the world.

First Reading: Isaiah 7:10-14; 8:10

A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah – In those days, 10the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying: 11“Ask the Lord your God to show you a sign, whether it comes from the depths of the earth or from the heights of heaven.” 12But Ahaz answered, “I will not ask or test the Lord.” 13The prophet said, “Hear now, O house of David: Is it not enough for you to trouble men, that you have troubled even my God? 14The Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel, 8:10for God is with us.” – The word of the Lord.

Second Reading: Hebrews 10:4-10

A reading from the letter to the Hebrews – Brothers and sisters, 4it is impossible to take away sins with the blood of bulls and goats. 5That is why, when Christ came into the world, he said: “You did not desire sacrifice or offering, but a body you prepared for me. 6You did not desire burnt offerings or sacrifices for sin. 7That is why I said, ‘Here I am!’ In the book it is written about me: ‘I have come to do your will, O God.’” 8After saying, “You did not desire sacrifices, offerings, burnt offerings, and sin offerings”—things offered according to the Law—and you did not desire them, 9he adds, “I have come to do your will.” In doing so, he abolishes the first sacrifice in order to establish the second. 10It is by this will that we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all. – The Word of the Lord.

Gospel: Luke 1:26-38

Glory to Christ, the eternal Word of the Father, who is love!

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke – At that time, 26the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, a descendant of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28The angel came to her and said, “Rejoice, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you!” 29Mary was greatly troubled at his words and began to wonder what kind of greeting this might be. 30Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31And behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and you shall name him Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. 33He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” 34Mary asked the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” 35The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy child to be born will be called the Son of God. 36Your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age. She who was said to be barren is now in her sixth month. 37For nothing will be impossible with God.” 38Then Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed. – Word of salvation.

Reflection:

The Gospel presents the appearance of the angel to Mary, inviting her to be the Mother of the Savior of humanity. The angel greets her with, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you.” Mary wonders what all this could mean. The angel reassures her, because she has found favor with God and will be a mother. She questions this, because she is not yet living with a man. The angel tells her to leave it to the Holy Spirit: “For God, nothing is impossible.” The Son to be born will be called Jesus, the Messiah, the very Son of God, who will bring salvation. It is precisely among the poor people that God brings forth the announcement of a new era of justice and peace. God heard the cry of the poor and brought forth from their midst the longed-for salvation: Jesus, which means “God saves.” In the end, Mary places herself at the service of God’s plans: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me as you have said to me.” God expects each person to be open to accepting his will. He uses people.

Ao entrar no mundo, Cristo afirma: Eu vim, ó Deus, para fazer a tua vontade (Hb 10,5.7).

Celebrando a solenidade da Anunciação do Senhor, demos graças a Deus pelo sim de Maria! Serva obediente à vontade divina, ela, com seu “faça-se”, inaugurou nova etapa na história da humanidade, concebendo, por obra do Espírito Santo, o Salvador do mundo.

Primeira Leitura: Isaías 7,10-14; 8,10

Segunda Leitura: Hebreus 10,4-10

Leitura da carta aos Hebreus – Irmãos, 4é impossível eliminar os pecados com o sangue de touros e bodes. 5Por isso, ao entrar no mundo, Cristo afirma: “Tu não quiseste vítima nem oferenda, mas formaste-me um corpo. 6Não foram do teu agrado holocaustos nem sacrifícios pelo pecado. 7Por isso eu disse: Eis que eu venho. No livro está escrito a meu respeito: Eu vim, ó Deus, para fazer a tua vontade”. 8Depois de dizer: “Tu não quiseste nem te agradaram vítimas, oferendas, holocaustos, sacrifícios pelo pecado” – coisas oferecidas segundo a Lei -, 9ele acrescenta: “Eu vim para fazer a tua vontade”. Com isso, suprime o primeiro sacrifício para estabelecer o segundo. 10É graças a essa vontade que somos santificados pela oferenda do corpo de Jesus Cristo, realizada uma vez por todas. – Palavra do Senhor.

Evangelho: Lucas 1,26-38

Glória a Cristo, Palavra eterna do Pai, que é amor!

A Palavra se fez carne e habitou entre nós. / E nós vimos sua glória, que recebe de Deus Pai (Jo 1,14). – R.

Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Lucas – Naquele tempo, 26o anjo Gabriel foi enviado por Deus a uma cidade da Galileia, chamada Nazaré, 27a uma virgem, prometida em casamento a um homem chamado José. Ele era descendente de Davi e o nome da virgem era Maria. 28O anjo entrou onde ela estava e disse: “Alegra-te, cheia de graça, o Senhor está contigo!” 29Maria ficou perturbada com essas palavras e começou a pensar qual seria o significado da saudação. 30O anjo, então, disse-lhe: “Não tenhas medo, Maria, porque encontraste graça diante de Deus. 31Eis que conceberás e darás à luz um filho, a quem porás o nome de Jesus. 32Ele será grande, será chamado Filho do Altíssimo, e o Senhor Deus lhe dará o trono de seu pai Davi. 33Ele reinará para sempre sobre os descendentes de Jacó, e o seu reino não terá fim”. 34Maria perguntou ao anjo: “Como acontecerá isso se eu não conheço homem algum?” 35O anjo respondeu: “O Espírito virá sobre ti e o poder do Altíssimo te cobrirá com sua sombra. Por isso, o menino que vai nascer será chamado Santo, Filho de Deus. 36Também Isabel, tua parenta, concebeu um filho na velhice. Este já é o sexto mês daquela que era considerada estéril, 37porque para Deus nada é impossível”. 38Maria, então, disse: “Eis aqui a serva do Senhor; faça-se em mim segundo a tua palavra!” E o anjo retirou-se. – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

O Evangelho apresenta a aparição do anjo a Maria, convidando-a a ser a Mãe do Salvador da humanidade. O anjo a saúda com “ave, cheia de graça, o Senhor está contigo”. Maria pensa o que significaria tudo isso. O anjo a tranquiliza, pois ela encontrou graça diante de Deus e será mãe. Ela questiona, pois ainda não está convivendo com nenhum homem. O anjo lhe diz para deixar por conta do Espírito Santo: “Para Deus, nada é impossível”. O Filho a nascer será chamado Jesus, o Messias, o próprio Filho de Deus, que trará a salvação. É justamente no meio do povo pobre que Deus suscita o anúncio de uma nova era de justiça e paz. Deus ouviu o clamor dos pobres e fez brotar do seu meio a salvação esperada: Jesus, que significa “Deus salva”. No final, Maria se coloca a serviço dos planos de Deus: “Eis a serva do Senhor. Faça-se em mim como você me disse”. Deus espera de cada um abertura para acolher sua vontade.
