Blessed are those who trust in God and bear fruit of life for the benefit of others. The desire for wealth and social position inhibits compassion for the Lazaruses of today and weakens the practice of solidaritTest me, O God, and know my thoughts; see if I walk in the path of evil, and lead me in the way of eternity (Ps 138:23ff).

y. Let us celebrate our commitment to faith and conversion.

First Reading: Jeremiah 17:5-10

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah – 5This is what the Lord says: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord. 6Like a thistle in the desert, it does not see its blossoms, but rather grows in the dry wasteland, in a salty and uninhabited place. 7Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose hope is the Lord. 8Like a tree planted by the waters, that sends out its roots seeking moisture, and is not afraid when heat comes; its leaves remain green; it does not wither in drought, Test me, O God, and know my thoughts; see if I walk in the path of evil, and lead me in the way of eternity (Ps 138:23ff).

and it never fails to bear fruit. 9The heart is deceitful in every way, and beyond cure; who can know it? 10I, the Lord, search the heart and test the mind, and I give to each person according to his ways and according to the fruit of his deeds.” – The Word of the Lord.

1. Blessed are those who do not walk in the counsel of the wicked, / who do not walk in the way of evildoers / or sit with mockers, / but who delight in the law of God / and meditate on it day and night without ceasing. – R.

2. He is like a tree / planted by the stream, / that always yields its fruit in its season, / and its leaf never withers. / And all that he does prospers. – R.

3. But the fate of the wicked is quite different. † Rather, they are like dry chaff / scattered by the wind. / For God watches over the way of the elect, / but the path of the wicked leads to death. – R.

Gospel: Luke 16:19-31

Glory to Christ, the eternal Word of the Father, who is love!

Happy are those who observe / the Word of the Lord with an upright heart / and who bear much fruit, / persevering until the end! (Lk 8:15) – R.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke – At that time, Jesus said to the Pharisees: 19“There was a rich man who dressed in purple and fine linen and feasted sumptuously every day. 20A poor man named Lazarus was lying at the rich man’s gate, covered with sores. 21He wanted to satisfy his hunger with the scraps that fell from the rich man’s table. And the dogs came and licked his sores. 22When the poor man died, the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23In Hades, in torment, the rich man looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24Then he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me! Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in order to cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames.’ 25But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things. But now he is comforted here, while you are in torment. 26And besides all this, there is a great gulf between us; no one could possibly cross from here to you, nor could anyone cross from there to us.’ 27The rich man said to him, ‘I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father’s house, 28for I have five brothers. Tell them to warn them so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ 29But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’ 30The rich man said to him, ‘No, father Abraham, but if one of the dead goes to them, they will surely repent.’ 31But Abraham said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’” – Word of salvation.

Reflection:

The parable of the poor Lazarus (whose name in Hebrew means “God helps”), which we meditate on today, makes Mary’s song come true: “God has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty” (Luke 1:52-53). It shows that the prophecies begin to become reality through Jesus’ actions and that a social, human and spiritual transformation is already taking place. Perhaps the greatest lesson of this Gospel is the fact that eternal life is the continuation of what we already experience in this world, so we must prepare ourselves for it with appropriate conduct now, because God knows each human being in their innermost being and rewards according to our heart.

Provai-me, ó Deus, e conhecei meus pensamentos: vede se ando pela vereda do mal e conduzi-me no caminho da eternidade (Sl 138,23s).

É feliz quem confia em Deus e produz frutos de vida em favor dos outros. A ânsia por riqueza e posição social inibe a compaixão pelos Lázaros de hoje e enfraquece a prática da solidariedade. Celebremos nosso compromisso de fé e conversão.

Primeira Leitura: Jeremias 17,5-10

Leitura do livro do profeta Jeremias – 5Isto diz o Senhor: “Maldito o homem que confia no homem e faz consistir sua força na carne humana, enquanto o seu coração se afasta do Senhor; 6como os cardos no deserto, ele não vê chegar a floração, prefere vegetar na secura do ermo, em região salobra e desabitada. 7Bendito o homem que confia no Senhor, cuja esperança é o Senhor; 8é como a árvore plantada junto às águas, que estende as raízes em busca de umidade, por isso não teme a chegada do calor: sua folhagem mantém-se verde – não sofre míngua em tempo de seca e nunca deixa de dar frutos. 9Em tudo é enganador o coração, e isso é incurável; quem poderá conhecê-lo? 10Eu sou o Senhor, que perscruto o coração e provo os sentimentos, que dou a cada qual conforme o seu proceder e conforme o fruto de suas obras”. – Palavra do Senhor.

Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Lucas – Naquele tempo, disse Jesus aos fariseus: 19“Havia um homem rico, que se vestia com roupas finas e elegantes e fazia festas esplêndidas todos os dias. 20Um pobre, chamado Lázaro, cheio de feridas, estava no chão, à porta do rico. 21Ele queria matar a fome com as sobras que caíam da mesa do rico. E, além disso, vinham os cachorros lamber suas feridas. 22Quando o pobre morreu, os anjos levaram-no para junto de Abraão. Morreu também o rico e foi enterrado. 23Na região dos mortos, no meio dos tormentos, o rico levantou os olhos e viu de longe a Abraão, com Lázaro ao seu lado. 24Então gritou: ‘Pai Abraão, tem piedade de mim! Manda Lázaro molhar a ponta do dedo para me refrescar a língua, porque sofro muito nestas chamas’. 25Mas Abraão respondeu: ‘Filho, lembra-te que tu recebeste teus bens durante a vida e Lázaro, por sua vez, os males. Agora, porém, ele encontra aqui consolo e tu és atormentado. 26E, além disso, há um grande abismo entre nós: por mais que alguém desejasse, não poderia passar daqui para junto de vós e nem os daí poderiam atravessar até nós’. 27O rico insistiu: ‘Pai, eu te suplico, manda Lázaro à casa do meu pai, 28porque eu tenho cinco irmãos. Manda preveni-los, para que não venham também eles para este lugar de tormento’. 29Mas Abraão respondeu: ‘Eles têm Moisés e os Profetas, que os escutem!’ 30O rico insistiu: ‘Não, pai Abraão, mas se um dos mortos for até eles, certamente vão se converter’. 31Mas Abraão lhe disse: ‘Se não escutam a Moisés nem aos Profetas, eles não acreditarão, mesmo que alguém ressuscite dos mortos'”. – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

A parábola do pobre Lázaro (cujo nome em hebraico significa “Deus auxilia”), que hoje meditamos, concretiza o cântico de Maria: “Deus derrubou dos tronos os poderosos e exaltou os humildes, encheu de bens os famintos e despediu os ricos sem nada” (Lc 1,52-53). Mostra que as profecias começam a se tornar realidade a partir da ação de Jesus e que uma transformação social, humana e espiritual está já acontecendo. O maior ensinamento deste Evangelho talvez seja o fato de que a vida eterna é a continuidade do que vivemos já neste mundo, por isso devemos nos preparar para ela com uma conduta adequada já agora, pois Deus conhece cada ser humano em seu íntimo e retribui de acordo com nosso coração.
