The waves of death have engulfed me, and the torrents of evil have overwhelmed me; I called upon the Lord in my distress, and he heard my voice from his temple (Ps 17:5ff).

The powerful do not tolerate the message of Jesus, because it takes away their privileges. As Christians, when we celebrate the Eucharist, let us open ourselves to the will of the Father and entrust our mission to him, leaving aside selfish interests.

First Reading: Jeremiah 11:18-20

Gospel: John 7:40-53

Reflection:

The disagreements about the messiahship of Jesus continue. John develops the theme with several details and a certain irony, mocking the ignorance of the Jewish leaders about the origin of Jesus. His message leads to a position being taken. Many believe and follow Jesus, but the hardness of their hearts and the blindness of hypocrisy prevent the priests and Pharisees from recognizing him as the Messiah. Today's Gospel also alerts us to the importance of not judging anyone without first listening to them and knowing what they did. In certain events, today as in the past, society judges by appearances and based on its prejudices. Many times, it is Christians themselves who end up falling into this sin.

Ondas da morte me envolveram totalmente, e as torrentes da maldade me aterraram; ao Senhor eu invoquei na minha angústia e de seu templo ele escutou a minha voz (Sl 17,5ss).

Os poderosos não toleram a mensagem de Jesus, porque ela acaba com seus privilégios. Celebrando a Eucaristia, como cristãos, abramo-nos à vontade do Pai e lhe confiemos nossa missão, deixando de lado interesses egoístas.

Vai estudar e verás que da Galileia não surge profeta”. 53E cada um voltou para sua casa. – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

As divergências sobre a messianidade de Jesus continuam. João desenvolve o tema com vários pormenores e certa ironia, zombando da ignorância dos chefes dos judeus sobre a origem de Jesus. Sua mensagem conduz a uma tomada de posição. Muitos creem e seguem Jesus, mas a dureza de coração e a cegueira da hipocrisia impedem os sacerdotes e fariseus de o reconhecerem como o Messias. O Evangelho de hoje nos alerta ainda para a importância de não julgar ninguém sem antes o ouvir e saber o que ele fez. Em certos acontecimentos, hoje como ontem, a sociedade julga pelas aparências e a partir de seus preconceitos. Muitas vezes, são os próprios cristãos que acabam caindo nesse pecado.
