Defend me, O God, against the wicked; deliver me, O Lord, from the wicked and the liar! You are my God and my refuge (Ps 42:1ff).

Gathered to celebrate the Eucharist, we are invited to welcome God’s love and mercy, so that they may flow through our hearts like rivers on dry land. The power of Christ’s resurrection is manifested in the lives of those who seek communion with him; let us therefore move forward on our journey of faith, overcoming hypocrisy and the vice of pointing fingers. The Lord always forgives and gives everyone the opportunity to begin anew.

First Reading: Isaiah 43:16-21

The readings reveal to us God’s tenderness and compassion for us: he does new things for his people and encourages us to press forward, to live in union with his Son.

A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah – 16This is what the Lord says, who made a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters, 17who destroyed chariots and horses, troops and warriors, who are all dead and will not be raised, who are quenched like a wick and extinguished: 18“Do not dwell on the former things, do not consider the things of old. 19Behold, I will do new things, things that are already springing up; do you not recognize them? For I will make a highway in the wilderness and make rivers flow in the dry land. 20The wild animals, the dragons and the ostriches, will praise me, because I have made waters flow in the wilderness and rivers in the dry land, to give drink to my people, my chosen ones. 21I created these people for myself, and they will sing my praises.” – The word of the Lord.

Second Reading: Philippians 3:8-14

I consider everything a waste, so that I may gain Christ and be found in him, 9not with my own righteousness from the law, but with the righteousness that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. 10This is to know Christ, to experience the power of his resurrection, to share in his sufferings, being made like him in his death, 11so that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. 12Not that I have already obtained all this or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of it, since Christ Jesus has taken hold of me. 13Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. Gospel: John 8:1-11

Glory to you, O Christ, the Word of God.

And now this is what the Lord says: / Return to me from your heart, / for I am kind, compassionate, and merciful (Joel 2:12ff). – R.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John – At that time, 1Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2Early in the morning he returned to the temple courts. All the people gathered around him. He sat down and began to teach them. 3Meanwhile, the teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman who had been caught in adultery. Then they placed her in their midst and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5In the Law, Moses commanded that such women be stoned. What do you say?” 6They asked this to test Jesus and to have a reason to accuse him. But Jesus bent down and wrote on the ground with his finger. 7When they continued to question him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8And again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9When they heard what he said, they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, and Jesus was left alone with the woman, who was standing there in the crowd. 10Then Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11She said to him, “No one, Lord.” Then Jesus said to him, “Neither do I condemn you. You may go, and from now on, sin no more.” – Word of salvation.

Reflection:

While Jesus was teaching in the temple, the scribes and Pharisees brought him a woman “caught in adultery.” According to the Law, she should be stoned, and they asked him, “What do you say?” The Master did not answer his adversaries’ question and proposed an alternative: anyone who had not sinned could stone her. No one threw any stones. The moral of the story: the woman was not the only sinner! There have always been moralists on duty, ready to throw stones at women, people, and various groups at the slightest mistake. Many throw stones at others in an attempt to cover up their own faults and interests. As long as we condemn this or that person, this or that group, and do not look inside ourselves with sincerity, violence, suffering, and intolerance will continue to take lives. Jesus did not come to judge and condemn, but to restore the dignity of the person. He brought the love, mercy, and forgiveness of his Father.

Reunidos para celebrar a Eucaristia, somos convidados a acolher o amor e a misericórdia de Deus, para que abram caminho em nosso coração como rios em terra seca. A força da ressurreição de Cristo se manifesta na vida daqueles que buscam a comunhão com ele; lancemo-nos, pois, para a frente em nosso percurso de fé, superando as hipocrisias e o vício de apontar o dedo. O Senhor sempre perdoa e concede a todos a possibilidade de recomeçar.

Primeira Leitura: Isaías 43,16-21

As leituras nos revelam a ternura e a compaixão de Deus para conosco: ele realiza coisas novas para o povo e nos incentiva a lançar-nos para a frente, a fim de vivermos unidos a seu Filho.

Por causa dele, eu perdi tudo. Considero tudo como lixo, para ganhar Cristo e ser encontrado unido a ele, 9não com minha justiça provindo da Lei, mas com a justiça por meio da fé em Cristo, a justiça que vem de Deus, na base da fé. 10Esta consiste em conhecer a Cristo, experimentar a força da sua ressurreição, ficar em comunhão com os seus sofrimentos, tornando-me semelhante a ele na sua morte, 11para ver se alcanço a ressurreição dentre os mortos. 12Não que já tenha recebido tudo isso ou que já seja perfeito. Mas corro para alcançá-lo, visto que já fui alcançado por Cristo Jesus. 13Irmãos, eu não julgo já tê-lo alcançado. Uma coisa, porém, eu faço: esquecendo o que fica para trás, eu me lanço para o que está na frente. 14Corro direto para a meta, rumo ao prêmio que, do alto, Deus me chama a receber em Cristo Jesus. – Palavra do Senhor.

Evangelho: João 8,1-11

Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo João – Naquele tempo, 1Jesus foi para o monte das Oliveiras. 2De madrugada, voltou de novo ao templo. Todo o povo se reuniu em volta dele. Sentando-se, começou a ensiná-los. 3Entretanto, os mestres da Lei e os fariseus trouxeram uma mulher surpreendida em adultério. Colocando-a no meio deles, 4disseram a Jesus: “Mestre, esta mulher foi surpreendida em flagrante adultério. 5Moisés, na Lei, mandou apedrejar tais mulheres. Que dizes tu?” 6Perguntavam isso para experimentar Jesus e para terem motivo de o acusar. Mas Jesus, inclinando-se, começou a escrever com o dedo no chão. 7Como persistissem em interrogá-lo, Jesus ergueu-se e disse: “Quem dentre vós não tiver pecado seja o primeiro a atirar-lhe uma pedra”. 8E tornando a inclinar-se, continuou a escrever no chão. 9E eles, ouvindo o que Jesus falou, foram saindo um a um, a começar pelos mais velhos; e Jesus ficou sozinho com a mulher que estava lá, no meio do povo. 10Então Jesus se levantou e disse: “Mulher, onde estão eles? Ninguém te condenou?” 11Ela respondeu: “Ninguém, Senhor”. Então Jesus lhe disse: “Eu também não te condeno. Podes ir e, de agora em diante, não peques mais”. – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

Enquanto Jesus ensina no templo, os escribas e os fariseus lhe trazem uma mulher “surpreendida em adultério”. Segundo a Lei, deve ser apedrejada, e perguntam a ele: “O que dizes?”. O Mestre não responde à pergunta dos adversários e propõe uma alternativa: quem não tiver pecado pode apedrejá-la. Ninguém atirou pedra nenhuma. Moral da história: a mulher não era a única pecadora! Sempre existiram moralistas de plantão, prontos para lançar pedras contra mulheres, contra pessoas e grupos diversos diante de qualquer deslize. Muitos atiram pedras contra os outros na tentativa de encobrir as próprias falhas e interesses. Enquanto condenarmos esta ou aquela pessoa, este ou aquele grupo, e não olharmos dentro de nós com sinceridade, a violência, o sofrimento e a intolerância continuarão ceifando vidas. Jesus não veio para julgar e condenar, mas para resgatar a dignidade da pessoa. Ele trouxe o amor, a misericórdia e o perdão de seu Pai.
