 Let the heart that seeks God rejoice! Seek the Lord God and his strength; seek his face continually (Ps 104:3ff).

This liturgy reminds us that, despite our many infidelities, God remains faithful and merciful. In Jesus, those who believe are offered life and salvation, gifts of the Father's infinite love, whose glory we must always seek. Let us celebrate with faith.

First Reading: Exodus 32:7-14

A reading from the Book of Exodus – In those days, 7the Lord said to Moses: “Go down, for your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt, have become corrupt. 8They have quickly turned aside from the way I commanded them. They have made for themselves a calf of molten metal, bowed down to it, and sacrificed to it, saying, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’” 9The Lord said to Moses, “I see that this is a stubborn people. 10Let my anger burn against them and let me destroy them. But I will make a great nation out of you.” 11But Moses pleaded with the Lord his God, saying, “Why, Lord, does your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand? 12Please do not let the Egyptians say, ‘It was with evil intent that he brought them out, to destroy them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earth.’ Turn away from your anger and forgive the iniquity of your people. 13Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, to whom you swore by oath, saying, ‘I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky; and all this land that I have spoken of I will give to your descendants as an inheritance forever.’” 14Then the Lord relented from the evil he had said he would do to his people. – The Word of the Lord.

Remember us, O Lord, / according to your love for your people!

1. They built a calf in Horeb / ​​and worshiped an image of metal; / they exchanged their God, who is their glory, / for the image of an ox that eats grass. – R.

Gospel: John 5:31-47

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John – At that time, Jesus said to the Jews: 31“If I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is not true. 32But there is another who testifies on my behalf, and I know that his testimony is true. 33You sent to John, and he testified to the truth. 34But I do not depend on the testimony of a human being. But I speak these things for your salvation. 35John was a burning and shining lamp, and you rejoiced for a time in his light. 36But I have a greater testimony than John: the works the Father has given me to accomplish. The works I do bear witness on my behalf, that the Father sent me. 37And the Father who sent me testifies on my behalf. You have never heard his voice or seen his face, 38and his word has not found a dwelling in you, because you do not believe in the one he sent. 39You search the Scriptures, thinking that in them you have eternal life. Yet the Scriptures testify about me, 40but you refuse to come to me to have eternal life. 41I do not receive glory that comes from men. 42But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. 43I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me. But if someone else came in his own name, you would receive him. 44How can you believe, since you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? 45Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father. Reflection:

Testimony is the central theme of the Gospel of John. Today we read Jesus’ second discourse on this theme, in which he recalls all those who bear witness to him: Moses, John the Baptist, his signs and, most importantly, God the Father (recalling the scene of the baptism, when the voice was heard from heaven). The testimony is true precisely because it comes from different sources, and not from Jesus himself. Even so, Jesus’ opponents do not believe. The mission of the Church today is to continue to bear witness to Christ, so that more and more people may convert and believe.

Exulte o coração que busca a Deus! Procurai o Senhor Deus e seu poder, buscai constantemente a sua face (Sl 104,3s).

Esta liturgia nos recorda que, apesar das nossas muitas infidelidades, Deus se mantém fiel e misericordioso. Em Jesus, àqueles que creem são oferecidas a vida e a salvação, dons do amor infinito do Pai, cuja glória nos cabe sempre buscar. Celebremos com fé.

Primeira Leitura: Êxodo 32,7-14

Leitura do livro do Êxodo – Naqueles dias, 7o Senhor falou a Moisés: “Vai, desce, pois corrompeu-se o teu povo, que tiraste da terra do Egito. 8Bem depressa desviaram-se do caminho que lhes prescrevi. Fizeram para si um bezerro de metal fundido, inclinaram-se em adoração diante dele e ofereceram-lhe sacrifícios, dizendo: ‘Estes são os teus deuses, Israel, que te fizeram sair do Egito!'” 9E o Senhor disse ainda a Moisés: “Vejo que este é um povo de cabeça dura. 10Deixa que minha cólera se inflame contra eles e que eu os extermine. Mas de ti farei uma grande nação”. 11Moisés, porém, suplicava ao Senhor seu Deus, dizendo: “Por que, ó Senhor, se inflama a tua cólera contra o teu povo, que fizeste sair do Egito com grande poder e mão forte? 12Não permitas, te peço, que os egípcios digam: ‘Foi com má intenção que ele os tirou, para fazê-los perecer nas montanhas e exterminá-los da face da terra’. Aplaque-se a tua ira e perdoa a iniquidade do teu povo. 13Lembra-te de teus servos Abraão, Isaac e Israel, com os quais te comprometeste por juramento, dizendo: ‘Tornarei os vossos descendentes tão numerosos como as estrelas do céu; e toda esta terra de que vos falei, eu a darei aos vossos descendentes como herança para sempre'”. 14E o Senhor desistiu do mal que havia ameaçado fazer ao seu povo. – Palavra do Senhor.

Evangelho: João 5,31-47

Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo João – Naquele tempo, disse Jesus aos judeus: 31“Se eu der testemunho de mim mesmo, meu testemunho não vale. 32Mas há um outro que dá testemunho de mim, e eu sei que o testemunho que ele dá de mim é verdadeiro. 33Vós mandastes mensageiros a João, e ele deu testemunho da verdade. 34Eu, porém, não dependo do testemunho de um ser humano. Mas falo assim para a vossa salvação. 35João era uma lâmpada que estava acesa e a brilhar, e vós com prazer vos alegrastes por um tempo com a sua luz. 36Mas eu tenho um testemunho maior que o de João: as obras que o Pai me concedeu realizar. As obras que eu faço dão testemunho de mim, mostrando que o Pai me enviou. 37E também o Pai que me enviou dá testemunho a meu favor. Vós nunca ouvistes sua voz nem vistes sua face, 38e sua palavra não encontrou morada em vós, pois não acreditais naquele que ele enviou. 39Vós examinais as Escrituras, pensando que nelas possuís a vida eterna. No entanto, as Escrituras dão testemunho de mim, 40mas não quereis vir a mim para ter a vida eterna! 41Eu não recebo a glória que vem dos homens. 42Mas eu sei que não tendes em vós o amor de Deus. 43Eu vim em nome do meu Pai, e vós não me recebeis. Mas, se um outro viesse em seu próprio nome, a este vós o receberíeis. 44Como podereis acreditar, vós que recebeis glória uns dos outros e não buscais a glória que vem do único Deus? 45Não penseis que eu vos acusarei diante do Pai. Há alguém que vos acusa: Moisés, no qual colocais a vossa esperança. 46Se acreditásseis em Moisés, também acreditaríeis em mim, pois foi a respeito de mim que ele escreveu. 47Mas se não acreditais nos seus escritos, como acreditareis então nas minhas palavras?” – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

O testemunho é o tema central do Evangelho de João. Hoje lemos o segundo discurso de Jesus sobre esse tema, no qual recorda todos os que dão testemunho dele: Moisés, João Batista, seus sinais e, o principal, Deus Pai (recordando a cena do batismo, quando se ouviu a voz vinda do céu). O testemunho é verdadeiro exatamente porque provém de fontes diversas, e não de Jesus, em primeira pessoa. Mesmo assim, os opositores de Jesus não acreditam. A missão da Igreja, hoje, é continuar a testemunhar Cristo, a fim de que sempre mais pessoas se convertam e creiam.
