Jesus makes His own defense. He does not bear witness to Himself, He does not depend on the testimony of a human being, His testimony surpasses that of John the Baptist. For Him, the testimony of the Father and that which He Himself gives through the works He performs are sufficient. He is aware of the existence of important witnesses in His favor: John the Baptist, the works He performed, the Father and the Scriptures (and in them, the testimony of Moses). Among them, John the Baptist is not the one with the greatest weight. John's testimony is relativized in the face of the works performed by Jesus and the testimony of the Father. It is not that it is not important, but it is not on a par with divine testimony. The testimony of the Father reveals the Son, Jesus Christ, as His envoy.

3. Jesus accuses the Jews. Even though the testimony of God and His works is clear, even though He reveals the love of God in every action, in every word, in every moment, they still do not perceive the presence of God, His action among them and for the good of all. There is, in fact, a profound blindness, something that really does not allow their eyes to open, something tremendously negatively rooted in their hearts. They are, in fact, unfaithful to the Word of God (they have become blind to this Word) and to their relationship with God, because by rejecting Jesus, in order to be good Jews, they seek glory from one another. The basis of such unfaithfulness and contempt for Jesus is precisely the fact that they do not love God.

4. Because of their unfaithfulness, Israel became a slave to many nations, especially Babylon. Because of this same unfaithfulness, dramatically manifested in the rejection of the Son of God, the Savior, Israel lost its Temple, no longer has a king, no longer has a place. Its leaders handed over the expected Messiah to death, OUTSIDE THE CITY, as a BANDITS, a DISGRACE, a CURSED OF YAHWEH. Then they expelled His disciples from the synagogues, from the places that were sacred to them, leaving them adrift, at the mercy of martyrdom. Well, these people will be a people again, when one day they discover Jesus Christ, the Messiah who has already come, the Savior they despised; when the scales fall from their eyes, like Saul; when they discover the love of God in Jesus Christ.

Jesus faz Sua própria defesa. Ele não dá testemunho de si mesmo, não depende do testemunho de um ser humano, seu testemunho supera o de João Batista. Para Ele é suficiente o testemunho do Pai e o que Ele mesmo dá por meio das obras que realiza. Ele é consciente da existência de testemunhas importantes a seu favor: João Batista, as obras por Ele realizadas, o Pai e as Escrituras (e nelas, o testemunho de Moisés). Dentre elas, João Batista não é o que tem maior peso. O testemunho de João é relativizado diante das obras mesmas realizadas por Jesus e do testemunho do Pai. Não é que não seja importante, mas não está à altura do testemunho divino. O testemunho do Pai revela o Filho, Jesus Cristo, como enviado Seu.

3. Jesus acusa os judeus. Mesmo sendo claro o testemunho de Deus e de suas obras, ainda que Ele revele o amor de Deus em cada ação, em cada palavra, em cada momento, mesmo assim não percebem a presença de Deus, Seu agir no meio deles e para o bem de todos. Há, de fato, uma profunda cegueira, algo que realmente não permite os olhos deles se abrirem, algo tremendamente enraizado negativamente em seus corações. Eles são, na verdade, infiéis à Palavra de Deus (tornaram-se cegos diante dessa Palavra) e à relação com Deus, pois ao rejeitar Jesus, para serem bons judeus, buscam a glória uns dos outros. O fundamento de tal infidelidade e desprezo a Jesus é, justamente, o fato de não amarem a Deus.

4. Por causa da infidelidade, Israel se tornou escravo de muitas nações, especialmente da Babilônia. Por causa dessa mesma infidelidade, dramaticamente manifestada na rejeição ao Filho de Deus, o Salvador, Israel perdeu seu Templo, não tem mais rei, não tem mais lugar. Seus líderes entregaram o Messias esperado à morte, FORA DA CIDADE, como um BANDIDO, uma DESGRAÇA, um MALDITO DE JAVÉ. Depois, expulsaram os discípulos Dele das sinagogas, dos lugares para eles sagrados, deixando-os à deriva, à disposição do martírio. Pois bem, esse povo será novamente um povo, quando, um dia, descobrir Jesus Cristo, o Messias que já veio, o Salvador por eles desprezado; quando as escamas caírem dos seus olhos, à exemplo de Saulo; quando descobrirem o amor de Deus em Jesus Cristo.
