They have noticed the power of God working through them. Furthermore, they can now teach what they have learned from the Master. In addition to their joyful return, the verse highlights Jesus’ relationship with and formation of his disciples: Jesus prepares them, listens to them and nourishes them with God’s dream of salvation and the need to be true missionaries. With this, something else is revealed: Jesus’ concern with the formation of a foundation chosen and prepared by himself to continue his salvific mission in history. In other words, Jesus is forming the New Israel, the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

2. Daily missionary activity has many challenges. One of them is fatigue, caused by the people’s need to encounter God, themselves and seek relief for their suffering. If you find someone or people who can truly transmit peace, meaning in life, correct guidance, understand you and listen to you, you will never stop looking for them. This is what Mark shows in this text. The people make every possible effort not to stray from Jesus and his disciples, even though they are tired and looking for a deserted place to rest. Jesus and his disciples work hard to serve these people, whom Jesus sees as sheep without a shepherd.

3. The political and religious leaders of Israel did not care about the needs of the people, their interests and their future. They were false shepherds, exploiters of the people, profiteers and dividers of the needy society. In fact, the poor have always been marginalized, seen as the rest of the world. Jesus sees them differently and teaches his disciples to give preference precisely to those who suffer contempt. In Jesus, the prophecy of Jeremiah 23:4-5 is being fulfilled: “I will raise up new shepherds for them (the sheep, the people of God)… I will raise up a descendant of David.” Through His blood, Jesus will bring humanity closer together, build unity, and give Israel and the pagans the condition to form a new people, not a mixture, but ONE NEW PEOPLE, embodied in the reality of each NEW MAN, born through faith and baptism, forming one body, the Body of Christ, through the action of the Holy Spirit (cf. Eph 2:13-18).

4. The text also guides us toward rest, which is important for restoring strength and for reflecting better on what has been done and what still needs to be done and how to do it. It is a way of reinvigorating and deepening our personal and missionary reality. Rest is based on the seventh day, the Lord’s day. One should not confuse well-deserved rest with "rest from the mission", which must be tirelessly carried out with love, dedication and self-denial. In this case, the fatigue would be more in the mind, in the sense and in the giving of oneself. In this lies the risk of losing the evangelizing sense. Therefore, the heart and mind of the disciple must be completely involved with the cause of the Kingdom of God and with the deepest intimacy with Jesus, the Evangelizer of the Father.

Os discípulos retornam da missão e são convidados por Jesus para descansarem um pouco. O retorno dos discípulos é marcado pelo modo entusiasta da missão. Eles perceberam o poder de Deus agindo através deles. Além disso, já podiam ensinar o que tinham aprendido do Mestre. O versículo evidencia, além do alegre retorno, o modo de relacionamento e formação de Jesus com seus discípulos: Jesus prepara-os, escuta-os e alimenta-os do sonho de salvação de Deus e da necessidade de serem verdadeiramente missionários. Com isso, algo mais se revela: a preocupação de Jesus com a formação de um fundamento por ele mesmo escolhido e preparado para continuar, na história, sua missão salvífica. Em outras palavras, Jesus está formando o Novo Israel, a Igreja Una, Santa, Católica e Apostólica.

 

2. A atividade cotidiana missionária tem muitos desafios. Um deles é o cansaço, provocado pela necessidade que o povo tem de se encontrar com Deus, consigo e de buscar alívio para os seus sofrimentos. Encontrando alguém ou alguns que possam, verdadeiramente, transmitir-lhe paz, sentido na vida, orientação correta, entendê-lo e escutá-lo, jamais deixará de procurá-lo. É o que Mc mostra nesse texto. O povo faz todo esforço possível para não se afastar de Jesus e seus discípulos, mesmo eles estando cansados, procurando um lugar deserto para descansar. Jesus e os seus discípulos se desgastam para atender esse povo, visto por Jesus como ovelhas sem pastor.

 

3. Os dirigentes políticos e religiosos de Israel não davam importância à necessidade do povo, aos seus interesses e ao seu futuro. Eram falsos pastores, exploradores do povo, aproveitadores e divisores da sociedade necessitada. Na verdade, o pobre sempre foi marginalizado, visto como o resto do mundo. Jesus enxerga-o diferente e ensina seus discípulos a darem preferência justamente a todo aquele que sofre desprezo. Em Jesus está se realizando a profecia de Jr 23,4-5: “Suscitarei para elas (as ovelhas, o povo de Deus) novos pastores… farei nascer um descendente de Davi”. Jesus, pelo Seu sangue, aproximará a humanidade, construirá a unidade, dará a Israel e aos pagãos a condição de formarem um novo povo, mas não uma mistura, mas UM NOVO POVO, concretizado na realidade de cada HOMEM NOVO, nascido pela fé e pelo batismo, formando um só corpo, o Corpo de Cristo, mediante ação do Espírito Santo (cf. Ef 2,13-18).

 

4. O texto também orienta para o descanso, que é importante para a restauração das forças e para se refletir melhor no que foi feito e naquilo que ainda se deve fazer e como fazê-lo. É uma forma de revigoramento e aprofundamento da realidade pessoal e missionária. O descanso tem seu fundamento no sétimo dia, o dia do Senhor. Não se deve confundir o merecido descanso com o "descansar da missão", que deve ser incansavelmente conduzida com amor, dedicação e renúncia de si mesmo. Nesse caso, o cansaço seria mais na mente, no sentido e na doação de si mesmo. Nisso habita o risco da perda de sentido evangelizador. Por isso, o coração e a mente do discípulo devem estar completamente envolvidos com a causa do Reino de Deus e com a mais profunda intimidade com Jesus, o Evangelizador do Pai.
